What The Heck Is A Table Read?

The read-through, or 'Table Read,' is one stage of film and theatre production when an organized reading of the screenplay or script is conducted around a table and read out loud by a narrator and actors who have been cast as or assigned the various characters containing dialogue. The 'Table Read' usually takes place towards the end of pre-production before the first shoot date, and before the rehearsal period, if any has been scheduled. It gathers many of the cast members and production team to go through the script together.

Why Should I Do A 'Table Read'?

A 'Table Read' is often a surprisingly powerful tool for identifying problem areas in the script. Wooden dialogue, unbelievable situations or boring sections of the film which have not been addressed during the script development process are often discovered in the 'Table Read', and may now come under intense scrutiny.
